To be a dead duck? or a sitting duck"; it seems the duck never had much luck! These idioms show how much humans like duck hunting, which takes place in autumn but also in winter. The hunter must keep still, always on guard, willing to freeze to the bone waiting for his poor victim to come close enough to be turned into confit or some other delicacy.
